One Weird Keyboard Problem – Troubleshooting By John R Smith Three days ago, after Tom adjusted some keyboard settings, he met a weird problem: the “NUM” light was in green all the time, but he was unable to input any key on the screen, this problem went on after he restarted his computer. Then he turned to me. Though keyboard is one of the frequently used computer hardware devices, if it has a problem, in many cases it is due to a poor contact or a wrong plug. After eliminating the loose connection and some hardware problems, I tried to key characters into some text editing software programs and input website addresses in the browser, both failed. Then I brought to mind that probably the problem was behind the wrong keyboard settings. Considering this issue happened after Tom adjusted some keyboard settings, so I tried to locate it from there. ~~~~Buslink Wireless Keyboard**~~~~ I clicked Start, selected Control Panel and then double-clicked Keyboard to check its settings, but I could not find any fault that could cause this hitch. Then I wondered whether my troubleshooting method was right or not? But I had no other better idea. By accident, I [...]

3 of the Most Common Computer Problems …and What to Do About Them With computers being such an integral part of our day-to-day lives, it’s little surprise that computer problems can quickly turn our worlds upside down. Having a computer that won’t turn on, one that’s unbelievably slow or one that is acting plain weird can be a frustrating yet all-too-common experience. Thankfully, with a little effort on your part and access to an expert computer support team, the most common computer problems can be resolved quickly and efficiently. Computer Problem Number 1: The Computer Won’t Turn On Believe it or not, one of the most common computer problems involves simply getting the computer to turn on. So if you hit the power button and nothing happens, there are definitely a few things you’ll want to check. First, as obvious as it may seem, check the power supply. Is your computer plugged into to the power strip and is the power strip turned on? Ensure that the power cable is firmly seated in the power slot on the back of your computer as well. If your power cables are all plugged in and connected, it’s time to start looking elsewhere [...]

Computer Maintenance Fast Fixes Okay sooner or later your office PC (personal computer) will have something go wrong with it. Like any other office machine, computers are subject to glitches, bugs and crashes caused by failing hardware or software. And in the long run your small business PC will be no different. Just like in many home-based businesses, large modern offices have the exact same computer problems as a much smaller shops because they had the same “computer user” issues. All the computer users are mired in the “busy-ness” of the job at hand. “Busy-ness” is what happens when working folks, like you and me, get caught up in using our business PCs day-in and day-out without taking the time to perform proper computer maintenance on them. We lug around our laptops from home to car to office and back again without stopping. We download everything from music to maps without thinking about where these programs come from or what harm they can do to our business systems. “Busy-ness” is the secret serial killer of technology and the biggest source of on-going computer problems. We slowly kill our technology with software that has not been updated in years, by downloading [...]

Support.com – “Instant Technology Relief for Computer Problems” Format: Technical Support Service Delivery: Remote Connection and Phone Publisher: SupportSoft Order now for: $19.99*/mos** By now you may have noticed that this website is all about teaching people how to fix common computer problems on their own without expensive outside IT consultants. So why would I do a review on remote technical support service? The reason is simple. I try to write useful how-to articles that help non-technical people understand and use their computer technology better. But, sometimes, people just need a little extra help or something complex and nasty has really stumped them and they need a guiding hand. So who are they going to turn to for help at 1:00 AM in the morning or late on a Sunday afternoon? I did a lot of research on remote services, checked out their reviews and forums and dug down to the “company” behind the website, if possible. Sure, I found a ton of websites hyping this one or that one, but I liked Support.com best. Their parent company is SupportSoft, a NASDAQ (SPRT) corporation. They are the folks behind the helpdesk software systems for such customers as Lowe’s, Dell and [...]

No, no, no not for the reason you think! He keeps writing the ebooks, I wanted to do. Dang it! In his first ebook, Computer Secrets Unleashed! Volume 1: PC Tips and Tricks, Pryor laid out some the best computer maintenance and repair information; I have read in a long time. No, I’m not kidding. Okay, the guy ain’t Will Shakespeare, but who is? He’s an IT pro and in his manual he has written simple, easy to use steps just how to properly maintain and keep a home or small office computer up and running perfectly. He tells his readers the same thing I tell my own clients! It’s like being a echo chamber. Now his has gone and done it again with Computer Secrets Unleashed! Volume 1: PC Tips and Tricks Author: Rich Pryor Format: PDF Pages: 30+ Delivery: Download only Publisher: Hana Bound LLC Publication Date: 2009 Order now for: 3 Volume Package: $37.00** Now I admit to being to a skeptical and cynical so-and-so sometimes. I had seen ads for this ebook floating around the net for over a year. But I had ignored it mainly because; I never heard any other computer geeks talk about it much. Sure, I found a ton of Internet marketers yakking on about it but we all know some those guys live next door to crooked and would endorse a pile of bat poop if it had a big enough commission for it. So to say I was more than a little leery when I downloaded a copy of Mr. Pryor’s little ebook would be an understatement. I was both pleasantly surprised and impressed.
One the most dreaded questions a PC tech hears is, “How do I fix my slow PC?” You start to explain various fixes but then the client shakes his head and says, “No…I’m not doing all that…what software do I buy?” If you have spent any time on the Internet, you have seen the ads and websites claiming that they have this “software” or that “registry fix” that will “auto-magically” fix your slow PC. Well the truth is folks that most of those programs are just plain, old-fashioned “snake-oil” cures and are not worth the money. In my experience, below are the top 10 causes of computer slowdowns and the best way how to fix them… Cause 1 – Spyware & Adware If this is your problem you have already seen an increasing number of nasty little popups. Or your homepage has been hijacked and replaced some weird website, and now you see a strange little “icon” sitting on your desktop telling you that your “virus protection” is not activated! Yep, you been slammed with a heavy duty dose of spyware/adware. The Fix – Download and scan your computer with a good spyware/adware killer like “Spybot” or “Ad-Ware”.
Now you can “fix” all of the above problems by buying after-market parts like keyboards, mice and monitors but you did get this thing to be mobile, right? Laptop replacement parts for the average “do-it-yourself” Joe are expensive, hard to come by and tough to work with. Trust me on this one. Imagine lots of itty-bitty screws and tiny plastic parts and that’s just opening the case. Since you aren’t an authorized dealer, you will spend hours online or on the phone tracking down spec sheets, part numbers and used/new laptop components. The word “labor-intensive” is not applied lightly. You get the picture. All those things could be easily modified or changed on a regular old desktop with a quick trip to your local electronic superstore. And I won’t go in the short battery-life (which are never covered in the warranty and cost almost as much as a used laptop of the same age); “lug damage” (oops, I dropped my laptop and it can’t get up) and overheating issues some laptops have; this article is just too short for that. So, Now What? Unless you have to have one for work or study, I would say why spend the cash? [...]

Should You Buy a Desktop or a Laptop? So why would I compare a car manufacturer to an appliance maker? And what the heck does any of that have to do with your computer? When people ask me to either upgrade or repair their laptop for them; I usually tell them to take it to an authorized dealer, wait 1 to 3 weeks and be prepared to take out a second mortgage. I’m just kidding, but only a just a little bit. Of course you can replace parts in a laptop like you can any other PC, but the point I’m trying to make is that desktops and laptops are fundamentally different. Ok, smarty-pants, we both know that laptops were designed to be the ultimate, portable computing tool for road warriors, students on the go and other users who desire mobility (i.e. surfing the web from bed or paying the bills from the kitchen table). While desktops, on the other hand were designed to be the stay-at-home workhorses. Desktop computers (either a true “desktop” model or a floor-based “tower”) are designed like automobiles in that they can be easily modified or upgraded with standard after-market parts. This is called “open-source [...]

Before you close the case and throw away the receipt, power up and test everything! Ok, you have reinstalled or replaced the defective part. Now you should test it. And test it and test it. Turn your machine on and off several times. Testing keeps down the frustration levels. Go online and poke about for a while. Open the word processor and write a letter. This is the time to run any diagnostic programs you may have. Make certain things are running smoothly before you put the case back on and put the whole thing back under your desk. Don’t lose your mind if something is still flaky. Just go back to step 2 – go take a break! Simply walk away, clear your head and start over. Start with the simple and obvious. Did I tell you how frustrating it was when after having spent over an hour working to replace my modem; I accidentally loosened the power cable on the monitor?
